Normal proposals

Proposal process

To apply for beamtime at the Australian Synchrotron, submit an application via the online proposal system (the portal).  Proposals are accepted 3 times a year (see key dates).

Normal merit proposals are peer-reviewed for scientific merit by external scientific reviewers and a specialist committee. The technical feasibility of the proposal is also reviewed.  Based on these reviews, proposals are then ranked by the Program Advisory Committee (PAC) for each beamline.

Users are then notified by the User Office of the outcomes of these allocations.

Applying for merit and foundation investor beamtime

Normal merit beamtime applications are the standard method to apply for beamtime at the Australian Synchrotron and approximately 50% of beamtime is awarded to merit proposal applications. Foundation investor beamtime is only open to applicants from the 11 foundation investor (FI) consortia members and makes up approximately 30% of the time available (i.e. approximately 3% per FI consortium).

If you belong to an FI consortium, you can maximise your prospects for beamtime by submitting a proposal that will be considered for both normal (merit-based) and FI beamtime. To do this, please prepare a normal proposal as outlined above and then check the 'submit for foundation investor beamtime' on the submit page of your proposal to give your FI group access to your proposal.
