Please Note: Construction of new building at the Australian Synchrotron

Due to construction at the Australian Synchrotron, user and visitor parking has been moved to the North side of the Australian Synchrotron. Construction will continue throughout the year.

Airport Shuttle Services

Skybus Super Shuttle
This express shuttle bus is operated independently of the Metlink public transport system and runs 24 hours, 7 days. It is the cheapest and greenest means of reaching the Melbourne CBD from Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine). The Skybus is a fixed route service which terminates at Southern Cross Station (formerly Spencer Street Station) in the Melbourne CBD before completing the return journey (~20 min. each way).

Please be aware that this shuttle service will only bring you into the Melbourne CBD and you will need to arrange further transport to then travel to the Australian Synchrotron or your chosen place of accommodation.

There are Skybus ticket-sales booths (bright red) directly outside the baggage claim areas of Tullamarine airport Terminals T1 (serving Qantas & affiliates) and Terminal T3 (serving Virgin Domestic, Tiger Airways, Rex, and all International flights). Timetables and online ticket sales can be located here: http://www.skybus.com.au/

Airport Bus Eastside services
Airport Bus Eastside operates a shuttle bus service to and from Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine) out to Melbourne's northern and eastern suburbs. They offer 'fixed route' or 'door-to-door' mini-bus services, with prices based on service type, pickup location and the number of persons. Their website is located at: http://www.airportbus.com.au/

Please note that this company has a restrictive cancellation policy, so user groups who prefer flexibility of departure day/time may lose their fare if cancellation is made at short notice.

FIXED ROUTE
The nearest pickup locations for the 'fixed route' service include Glen Waverley, Mount Waverley, Knox, Forest Hill, Burwood and Blackburn. These locations are not within reasonable walking distance when encumbered by samples and luggage, so it would be necessary to either be dropped-off by colleagues using the pool car or take a SmartBus to meet the shuttle.

DOOR TO DOOR
The 'door-to-door' mini-bus service has rates dependent on pickup location.

Taxi Hire and Driving

Taxi Hire
As an alternative to commuting by public transport there are taxis readily available for use to destinations all around Melbourne. The Australian Synchrotron User Office has researched several taxi and corporate/chauffered alternatives for users to gain the best value out of their travel funding. Our preferred taxi service is:

Platinum Taxi Service (Jimmy) 0412 291 296

***Important note: that the Australian Synchrotron no longer provides users with cabcharge vouchers for travel. If you are travelling from interstate or New Zealand, please retain all receipts and present them to your host organisation. Further information regarding acquittal of travel expenses for interstate and New Zealand travellers can be located here

Arriving by road
The main roads leading to Melbourne's city centre are the Hume Highway from the north (Albury Wodonga, Yass and Sydney), Western Highway from the west (Adelaide), Princes Highway from the east (Gippsland), and Princes Highway from the south-west (Geelong).

Toll road from Airport and City (Citylink)

CityLink is Melbourne's toll road system that links the Tullamarine Freeway and the Monash Freeway. Visitors often use CityLink without realising a toll is payable. Tolls are only payable electronically (there are no toll booths).

If you are driving, you can purchase daily passes using a credit card by calling 13 26 29.

Local Public Transport

Overview
Buses and trains will be your best option when using public transport to get to the Australian Synchrotron. Tram lines do not come out to this part of Melbourne. There are a wide range of Metlink SmartBus services that run throughout the Monash precinct and can lead you to local shops & services, plus provide regular connections to trams and trains that take you around most of Melbourne.

BUS

Smartbus
The most direct bus service to the Australian Synchrotron is SmartBus #703. This bus operates on Blackburn Road and runs from Blackburn railway station to Middle Brighton station.

A route map and 'all stops' timetable of the SmartBus #703 service is located at: http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/maps-stations-stops/metropolitan-buses/bus/943

Route details for the other buses shown in the locality map are located here: http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/timetables/metropolitan-buses

For downloadable 'all-stops' timetables (in pdf format), for any of Melbourne's public transport options you will need to select the appropriate transport mode on this link: http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/timetables/ then the route number from the drop down list. Your chosen result will give you the option to then either view online or download a printable pdf version.

Nightrider
For late night public transport from the City to Clayton there is a NightRider Bus service which has a stop at Rusden Place, Notting Hill. A timetable of this bus can be viewed or downloaded at: http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/route/view/1820.

Ticket information for Metlink Buses, trains and trams

You will need to purchase a Metlink ticket if you intend to travel on any Melbourne metro bus, train or tram (note: the Airport Shuttle is not covered by this system, more information regarding shuttle services appears later in this section). There are two distinct travel zones within the Melbourne metro area, and travel is classified as either within Zone 1 only (inner city), within Zone 2 only (mid-to-outer suburbs) or across Zones 1 and 2. Fares differ according to the time period and zone/s for which a ticket is purchased. To view these zones, a map of the Melbourne train network can be  viewed or downloaded in pdf format at the following website link: http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/maps-stations-stops/metropolitan-trains/

Single 2-hour and daily tickets are available on board all trams (coin operated machines only) and buses, from train stations (via Metcard ticket machines) and online (via the link below). The following link also provides information on the full range of ticketing options, including package deals for more frequent travel: http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/fares-tickets/metropolitan-fares-and-tickets/

Australian Synchrotron Pool Vehicles

No transportation? The Australian Synchrotron has two pool vehicles on site. To sign out a vehicle during your stay please see the User Office who will require you to complete a ‘User Authorisation Form’ and scan a copy of your driver’s license.

Out of courtesy to other users, we ask that you sign out a vehicle for NO MORE than three hours at a time. Should you have transportation already on site, please use this rather than signing out a vehicle. For further information, please see the terms and conditions for use of pool vehicles given below or contact the User Office.

  • The User Office must be provided with the users drivers licence prior to signing out a vehicle.
  • The drivers licence must be written in English, if not they must provide a current International Driving Permit.
  • The Vehicle Sign In/Out Book in the User Office (located with Security after hours) must be signed and dated by the person who will be driving the car before taking out the vehicle and when returning it.
  • The driver must provide their name and a contact telephone number so that if a vehicle is required to be returned the driver can be contacted at all times.
  • The Pool vehicles can only be signed out for periods of less than three hours.
  • Pool vehicles cannot be taken overnight unless prior written permission has been sought from the Australian Synchrotron User Office.
  • When the driver takes the vehicle, they must use the Vehicle Log Book located on the dash to record the amount of kilometres they have used.
  • If the tank is less than ¼ full the driver must use the petrol cards provided and go to a participating petrol station and fill the tank with petrol.  The receipt from the transaction is then to be returned to the user office for record keeping.
  • Any fines or infringement incurred whilst using the pool vehicle, as well as any costs associated, will be the responsibility of the driver and not the Australian Synchrotron.
  • Failure to follow these guidelines by any individual will result in an immediate ban on use of any Australian Synchrotron pool vehicle until further notice.

GPS navigational devices are also available. Please see the User Office staff for further information.
