Powder Diffraction at Australia’s Synchrotron and OPAL Facilities: Experiment Planning to Data Analysis

The Powder Diffraction (PD) beamline at the Australian Synchrotron, in collaboration with the Wombat and Echidna PD instruments at OPAL, is hosting a powder diffraction data analysis workshop aimed at PhD students and early career researchers.

The workshop seeks to provide current and potential users of these powder diffraction facilities with a well rounded overview of powder diffraction techniques and software, including: basic crystallography; advice on experiment planning and applying for neutron or synchrotron beamtime; understanding the information contained within PD data; and an overview of data analysis software.

In 2011 the workshop will run for 4 days, from September 6 to 9.  It will include 2 days of lectures and 2 days of hands-on use of selected software packages; participants will be guided through set examples and will also have the opportunity to seek assistance relating to their own diffraction data.  To this end the workshop will be part tutorial and part practical.  Participants are therefore encouraged to bring a Windows-based laptop and, where available, their own powder diffraction data.

Location

On Tuesday and Wednesday the workshop will be held adjacent to the Australian Synchrotron, at 770 Blackburn Rd, Clayton, Victoria.  On Thursday and Friday the workshop will be held at the Australian Synchrotron, at  800 Blackburn Rd, Clayton, Victoria.

Date

Tuesday 6th September to Friday 9th September, 2011

Program

Workshop tutorials will be presented by experts in the field.  The program can be viewed here.

Accommodation and Meals

Participants travelling from interstate and overseas will be provided with accommodation. Please note, the Australian Synchrotron will pay only for the room cost, any additional charges to the room will be your responsibility.  Breakfast is NOT included.

Additional support for students and early career researchers to travel to the workshop is likely to be available from AINSE; more details will follow shortly.

Meals including lunch and morning/afternoon teas will be provided for all participants, as will dinner on the evening of Thursday 8th September.

If you decide to take the train you will need to purchase a separate ticket at the train station. You will need a zone 1+2, 2-hour ticket to take the 'Glen Waverley' line to Syndal Station. On arrival at Syndal station, use the same ticket to get on the 703 bus, which will take you close to either Rusden House or the Australian Synchrotron.  The bus departs from Blackburn Road.

The train trip will take approximately 40 mins, the bus trip approximately 10 mins.
