Soft X-ray Spectroscopy Satellite Workshop

The Soft X-ray beamline at the Australian Synchrotron is hosting a workshop in November on spectroscopy techniques in conjunction with the Australian Synchrotron User Meeting.

PROGRAM OUTLINE:

Day 1

Introduction to Soft X-ray Spectroscopy
Aimed at novice users, this session will include presentations and hands-on beamtime.  This session is strictly limited to 15 participants.
Day 2 Soft X-ray Beamline Developments
Sessions presented by beamline scientists and experts covering:
-    New toroidal endchamber
-    Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy
-    Coherent diffraction imaging

Up to 65 places are available for this session.
Day 3 Research Seminar Program
Research investigations will be selected for presentation using an abstract submission process.  Students and early career researchers will feature in this session.  Note:  if you are also submitting a presentation for the User Meeting, they must cover different studies.

The workshop will run over three days, with the first day limited to 15 novice, student users.  Day 2 will cover beamline techniques and developments and includes international and expert keynote speakers.  Day 3 will provide beamline users with the opportunity to present and discuss their research.  Users will be required to submit an abstract in order to be selected to give a presentation, presentations are particularly encouraged from students and early career researchers.  Abstract submissions will close on Friday, 12 October at 5pm, and you will be advised if your abstract has been submitted to be presented by Friday, 19 October.

Complimentary Student Registrations

Registrations for the two and three-day programs for students are complimentary.  However, places are limited and will be allocated based on responses to the registration questions.  All applicants will be advised by October 19 if they have been awarded a complimentary place.  If you are a student and are not awarded a complimentary place, or you wish to guarantee a place on days 2 and 3, please feel free to register via the paid registration.

Just because a student registers for a complimentary place, this does not guarantee acceptance.  Acceptance of complimentary registrations will be advised by Friday, October 19.

 

Travel Support

Some travel and accommodation support will be available to interstate student visitors.  Places will be allocated based on the responses to registration questions.

The National Centre for Synchrotron Science is a new facility located on the same site as the Australian Synchrotron. It houses a 400 seat auditorium, Exhibition Gallery, Cafe and the User Office. 

The Australian Synchrotron is located in Clayton, approximately 25km from Melbourne City Centre, and 50km from Melbourne Tullamarine Airport.

TRANSPORT TO THE AUSTRALIAN SYNCHROTRON

From the City:

A taxi from Melbourne city centre will cost approximately $50. 

If travelling by public transport, a combined train and bus service is recommended.  Travel via the Cranbourne or Pakenham lines to Huntingdale Station.  Express bus services run from Huntingdale Station to Monash University.  The Australian Synchrotron is approximately a 15 minute walk from this bus loop.  Travel time is likely to be around one hour.

From the Airport:

A taxi from Melbourne Tullamarine Airport will cost approximately $100.  If travelling from Melbourne Avalon Airport, the taxi fare will be approximately $174.

If travelling by public transport, Skybus service operates from Melbourne Tullamarine to the Melbourne city centre for $17 one-way/$28 return.  Sita Coaches operate a service from Melbourne Avalon Aiport to the Melbourne City Centre for $20 one-way/$38 return.  Refer to the information above for public transport information from the City.

Staying in the area

Australian Synchrotron Guesthouse

The Australian Synchrotron now has an onsite guesthouse.  There are a limited number of rooms available at the Guesthouse, and the rates are as follows:
 

Twin share and queen rooms : $90
2-bedroom apartment:  $120

Charges for accommodation are per room, per night and are inclusive of GST.  Each room has its own bathroom with shower.  Twin share rooms have two single beds in a shared room.  Queen rooms have one queen-size bed.  Apartments contain a double bed and a single bed in two separate rooms, and have a shared bathroom.  Please note:  no accommodation is available for children or pets.

Novotel Glen Waverley and Ibis Glen Waverley

These hotels are located next door to each other, approximately 5km from the Australian Synchrotron.   Bus route 737 provides a service from near to the hotels to the Synchrotron, and this takes around 15 minutes.  The rates are $195 per night including GST at the Novotel, which is undergoing extensive renovation in 2012.  At the Ibis, the rate is $165 per night including GST.

Staying nearer to Melbourne city centre

We understand that some guests may prefer to stay closer to central Melbourne while attending the User Meeting.  With this in mind, we recommend the options listed below.

Quest on Chapel

Located right on the cusp of cosmpolitan South Yarra, Quest on Chapel serviced apartments provide guests with easy access to the city, while being only moments from public transport links to the Australian Synchrotron.  The nearest station is South Yarra, two stops from central Melbourne, giving you a 'head start' in your journey compared with staying in the city.  Cafes, restaurants and shopping are on your doorstep, as is the Yarra River.  Rates include breakfast and are as follows:
