Secondary tours

Our school tours are designed to meet syllabus outcomes and enhance students’ understanding of nuclear science and technology. 

All tours are free and are available Monday to Friday for Years 7 to 12 classes.

Tours can be organised for a maximum of 160 students and can be customised to suit your students' needs.

Tour outlines

ANSTO offers a variety of curriculum-linked tours catering for all secondary students, including new tours for Year 11 Chemistry, Year 12 Physics and Year 12 Investigating Science. For more information on tour content, including syllabus content addressed, see the tour outlines below.

Tour outlines: Stages 3-5

Stage 3 Science: Introduction to ANSTO
  • Duration: 2.5 hours.
Stage 4-5 Science: Introduction to Nuclear Science
  • Duration: 2.5 hours.
Stage 5 Science: Introduction to Nuclear Science (Hands-on option)
  • Duration: 2.5 hours.
  • Available only for small groups (up to 80) of Year 9 and 10 students, we offer an optional program of hands-on activities in place of a presentation in the Discovery Centre theatre before the tour. Please bring your provided Hands-on Nuclear Science Workbooks with you

Tour outlines: Stage 6

Year 11 Chemistry (starting 2018)
  • Duration: 3.5 hours.
  • Addresses the new HSC Chemistry syllabus (2018 onwards).
Year 12 Physics (starting 2019)
  • Duration: 3.5 hours.
  • Addresses the new HSC Physics syllabus (2018 onwards).
Year 12 Investigating Science (starting 2019)
  • Details coming soon.
Year 12 Chemistry (until 2018)
  • Duration: 3 to 3.5 hours.
  • Addresses the pre-2018 HSC Chemistry syllabus.
Year 12 Physics (until 2018)
  • Duration: 3 to 3.5 hours.
  • Addresses the pre-2018 HSC Physics syllabus.

Tour Workbooks

Prior to your school's visit to ANSTO, students are provided with a workbook (digital copy) as suggested learning material to accompany the site tour. These workbooks can be viewed below.

Workbooks for new syllabus (2018 onwards)

Year 9 and 10 hands-on nuclear science workbook (MANDATORY)

Small groups of Year 9 and 10 students (up to 80 students) can elect to do a hands-on component to their ANSTO tour, using this worksheet. Please let us know that you'd like to do this option when you book your tour.

Year 11 Chemistry excursion workbook (starting 2018)

A supplement to our Year 11 Chemistry tour, this worksheet contains pre-work plus activities to complete during the excursion, covering nuclear-related components of Module 1: Properties and Structure of Matter.

Year 11 Chemistry depth study guide (starting 2018)

This guide provides resources and ideas for depth study activities, covering Working Scientifically skills and nuclear-related components of Module 1: Properties and Structure of Matter. We highly recommend students use a tour of ANSTO as the starting point for a depth study about nuclear science.

Year 12 Physics excursion workbook (starting 2019)

A supplement to our Year 12 Physics tour, this worksheet contains pre-work plus activities to complete during the excursion, covering nuclear-related components of Module 8: From the Universe to the Atom.
